(MCT)

Description

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are saturated fats prepared from coconut oil that range in length from 6 to 12 carbon chains.

Health Benefits

MCTs are used as an easily absorbed energy source in malabsorption syndromes and to promote weight loss. They increase calorie burning through diet-induced thermogenesis compared to longer-chain fats by approximately 50%.

Available Forms

  • MCTs: Available in liquid form, often with flavouring agents.

Dosage

  • Weight-loss aid: 1–2 tablespoons per day (roughly 14–28 g).
  • Malabsorption syndromes: Start with ½ tablespoon (7 g) for 3–4 days and gradually increase to 1–4 tablespoons per day.
