Description

Iodine is a trace element required in the manufacture of thyroid hormone. Specifically, the thyroid gland adds iodine to the amino acid tyrosine to create thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency can affect any age but is particularly harmful in pregnant women, the developing fetus, and newborns.

Available Forms

  • Potassium iodide: The most common form.
  • Kelp-derived iodine: Available in capsules, tablets, and liquid forms.

Dosage

The recommended dosage for iodine is based on the RDA:

  • Adults: 150 mcg/day.
  • Pregnant women: 220 mcg/day.
  • Breastfeeding women: 290 mcg/day Iron.
