Description

Cascara sagrada is a stimulant laxative made from the dried bark of the buckthorn tree. Its active components, anthraquinones, increase the strength of intestinal contractions.

Health Benefits

Cascara is used to relieve constipation but should be limited to occasional use, as prolonged use can reduce its effectiveness.

  • Cascara: Available in fluid extract, tablet, and capsule forms.

Dosage

  • Cascara: 300–1000 mg at bedtime for dried bark; 2–6 mL for fluid extract.
