Description
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing vitamin-like substance that plays an important role as the necessary cofactor in two vital energy-producing reactions involved in the production of cellular energy (ATP). Although it is not considered a vitamin, a relative deficiency can occur in certain situations, such as diabetes.
Health Benefits
Alpha-lipoic acid is an effective antioxidant. It is unique in that it is effective against both water- and fat-soluble free radicals. Double-blind clinical trials have shown that alpha-lipoic acid supplementation improves insulin sensitivity, blood sugar control, cardiovascular health, nerve function, lipid levels, and reduces symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid also boosts metabolism, promotes the burning of fat as energy, reduces food intake, and aids in weight loss.
Available Forms
- Alpha-lipoic acid: There are two chemical forms of alpha-lipoic acid designated R and S, which are mirror images of each other chemically. If a label simply states alpha-lipoic acid, it is more than likely an equal mixture of the R and S forms. However, only the R form is the biologically active form of alpha-lipoic acid. The S form is not active.
Dosage
- R-alpha-lipoic acid: The superior form is 200–300 mg daily.
- RS-alpha-lipoic acid: For this form, twice the level at 400–600 mg daily.
