The brain, composed of 60% fat including Omega-3 DHA and arachidonic acid, relies heavily on Omega-3 DHA for its function. A thicker brain, indicative of better health and cognitive abilities, is associated with a lower risk of dementia. The decline in brain size is linked to a reduced intake of Omega-3 rich marine foods. Countries consuming more seafood have lower rates of depression, suicide, and homicide. Hence, Omega-3 enhances mood, mind, and lowers dementia risk.
Fatheads – why being called a fathead is actually a compliment
Transcript
Are you a fat head? Now, that’s actually a compliment. Uh, not an insult. Your brain, if you take the water out is 60% fat. I mean, it’s an amazing thing. And in fact, every single brain of every single animal has two fats. Predominantly. One is a mega 3D HA, this is what you get in oily fish. Also in supplements, it’s absolutely vital. And the other is a type of omega six fat called arachidonic acid, which ultimately comes from plants, but it’s the Omega-3 DHA that all the talking in the brain happens through. It’s just vital. And in fact, we measure the Omega-3 index from a pin prick of blood. And your Omega-3 index, the percentage of your, uh, uh, that is Omega-3, determines your intelligence, your cognitive powers, your risk for dementia, and even the thickness of your brain. And again, that is a compliment. You wanna, you wanna have a thick brain. The thicker your brain, the more dense your brain, the better your health. And here’s an extraordinary thing. Human brain size has actually shrunk. And we, we think that that coincides with moving away from being hunter gatherer along the water’s edge, eating a lot more marine foods, which would give you all that wonderful Omega-3, the Del Mar, I mean, rich pickings of oysters must and crabs and fish caught in rock pools. I mean, it’s such easy and highly nutritious food, uh, into land-based agriculture. And, uh, this idea is illustrated by an extraordinary fact from World Health Organization data. And that is you can predict a country’s rate of depression, suicide, and homicide just from knowing its intake of seafood. So landlocked countries, the brains are not working so good, but those coastal regions, people are a lot more chilled. So you wanna be a head, you wanna have a thick brain full of omega threes, and that’s what’s gonna give you a better mood, a better mind, and less risk for dementia. So next time somebody calls you a fat head, take it as a compliment.
