A Little Exercise Could Go a Long Way in Reducing Cancer Progression, Study Finds

Transcript

Welcome back to the Daily News. Today we’re talking about how exercising might just be one of the best weapons we have to kick cancer to the curb. According to a report covered by medical news today, staying active and even just a little could dramatically reduce the risk of cancer progression. So let’s dive into how you can use your sneakers and sweatbands as your secret weapon against cancer. A massive study outta South Africa looked at over 28,000 people with early stage cancers. And guess what? The ones who were physically active before their diagnosis were 27% less likely to see their cancer progress. And that’s a massive difference. And even better though, is that they were 47% less likely to die from any cause that’s almost half just by moving your body. Now, before we go any further though, let’s just pause to say this loud and clear. Cancer is complex and it doesn’t discriminate. Many people who live active healthy lives still face a diagnosis, and that’s absolutely not their fault. Exercise isn’t a magic shield, but it can be one tool in our arsenal to support health. So let’s focus on what we can do to take back, at the very least, a little bit of control. So here’s how it works. Exercise doesn’t just build muscle and burn calories. It also keeps your immune system sharp and helps to regulate your body. And according to one of the studies authors, just one hour of regular weekly exercise could be enough to tip the scales in your favor. So that equates to less than 10 minutes per day. And I’m pretty sure you can squeeze that into your lunch breaks or even your streaming binges. And if you’re thinking, I’m not exactly training for a marathon here, well, no worries. Because even low levels of activity, like let’s say a brisk walk or even a bike ride, we’re shown to have major benefits. Now of course, the more you do, the better the results. So if you can aim for the Canadian Healthy Living Guideline of 150 minutes per week, a moderate exercise, you will be doing your body a huge favor. So why does this work though? Well, exercise helps your body in multiple ways. It keeps your blood flowing, it reduces inflammation, and even helps regulate those pesky little hormones that can play a role in cancer growth. And of course, we can’t forget about the mental health benefits too. It helps manage stress, keeps you feeling strong and gives you a sense of control in life. All of this adds up to a healthier, more resilient you. So whether it’s dancing in your kitchen, hiking with friends, or just doing some stretches at your desk, every move you make does count. So let’s take back a measure of control over our health one step at a time. We’d love to hear from you though, so please drop a comment below with your favorite way to get yourself moving.
