Are you overwhelmed by all the different types of collagen that you see at your local health food store? You’ve come to the right place. My name is Natasha. I’m a nutritionist, and I’m here to help you understand the different types of collagen so that you can be well-informed when you hit the shelves. So what are the main types of collagen? Well, when you think of types of collagen, you might be thinking about different sources like bovine or marine collagen. But in this video, instead of talking about collagen sources, we’re going to be talking about types. So what does that mean? There are actually 28 different types of collagen identified. On most labels, you’ll see the five main types. So we’re talking type 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10. Now let’s break it down. Type one collagen is the first one. So 90% of collagen in your body is type one collagen. So in your body, it can be found in your skin, your bones, blood vessels, teeth, cornea, so that’s in your eyes. Ligaments, and tendons. When we’re talking supplemental sources, we’re thinking of bovine collagen, marine and natural eggshell membrane Type two collagen can be found in ear cartilage as well as intervertebral discs. So that’s in your spine. And supplemental sources are chicken, cartilage type three. Collagen is in your skin, it’s in your muscles and tendons, ligaments, your organs, blood vessels, and your bones as well. And supplemental sources are bovine collagen type five collagen. So in your body, this can be found in cell surfaces, your skin, uh, cornea, blood vessels, bones, ligaments, and tendons. And then when we’re thinking of supplemental sources, natural eggshell membrane and type 10 collagen. So this can be found in articular cartilage of long bones. So that’s at the end of the bones within the joints. And supplemental sources are natural eggshell membrane. Some supplements will feature just one type of collagen, and other products are called multi collagen, which contain a combination of the different types. So there you have it, the five main types of collagen. Now, I know I mentioned 28 different types, but the five we talked about today are the main sources that you’ll find at local health food stores.
