Description

Vitamin K is an essential nutrient that plays a critical role in the activation of proteins required for blood clotting and bone health. There are three major forms of vitamin K:

  • Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone): Derived from plants.
  • Vitamin K2 (menaquinone): Derived from bacteria in the gut or certain fermented foods like natto.
  • Vitamin K3 (menadione): A synthetic derivative.

Health Benefits

  • Bone health: Vitamin K is required for producing osteocalcin, a key bone protein. K2 (MK-7) is the most potent form for improving bone density and preventing fractures.
  • Cardiovascular health: K2 helps prevent the hardening of arteries by directing calcium to bones rather than blood vessels.

Available Forms

  • MK-7: Available in capsules or tablets, this is the most important dietary supplement form of vitamin K.

Dosage

  • General health: 80–120 mcg daily.
  • Osteoporosis: 180–360 mcg daily.
